Alison has been a regular client of mine for many years, she’s part of the furniture now, and her appointments are like catching up with an old friend. Every four weeks without fail, she’s in the chair to top up her colour. Over time, we’ve tried and tested all sorts of products together. Her hair journey has been one of constant evolution, always adapting to what her hair needs, season by season, stage by stage.
Recently, Alison started noticing changes that didn’t seem to have a clear reason, her hair was becoming more unmanageable again, with a texture that felt unfamiliar. It wasn’t responding to styling in the way it used to, and even her trusty home routine wasn’t working like it had before.
We talked about it during her appointment, and it became clear that perimenopause was likely playing a big part. As those silver sparkles, her greys were becoming more resistant and began to come through more frequently, her hair texture was shifting. The strands felt more coarse and frizzy, and the overall condition was changing. Menopause, as we know, can have a huge impact on hair: texture, moisture retention, and even how it reacts to products.
After her appointment, I sent Alison home with a brand-new routine tailored just for this new chapter. We switched up her haircare products to suit the texture she was now working on focusing on hydration, smoothing, and strengthening.
We also had an honest chat about styling. She had been letting her hair dry naturally, thinking it was the gentler option, but with her new texture, it was actually making things more unruly. I gave her a refresher on blow-drying techniques, showing her how using a nozzle with her hairdryer helps direct the heat in the right way to help smooth and manage her hair rather than damage it. Showing her how to use her brushes, even how blotting with a towel helps, are all important steps to help give her self-care confidence back .
We then we went through product usage in detail: how much to use, how to apply it, and in what order. It’s one thing to send a client home with a bag of salon goodies; it’s another to make sure they know how to really use them for the best results. That little bit of extra education can make a world of difference.
When Alison had her colour we also added Goldwell Bond pro to her colour, and added a quasi to her ends with the Bond pro in to help with shine and texture too.
Alison left feeling empowered with her knowledge as well as a couple of new products to help her with this new stage.
A word from Alison.
“I didn’t expect perimenopause to affect my hair so much. It just felt like it changed overnight. Claire helped me understand what was going on, and didn’t just hand me products, she actually showed me how to use them properly. Now I feel like I’ve got a handle on things again. My hair looks better, feels better, and I feel more in control of it. Which is huge.”
