Vicki has been a client for many years, she has fine, low maintenance hair and visits regularly for colour and cuts. We have always had open chats in the salon, so when I told her I was having a hysterectomy she turned around and said she was booked in for one a couple of months after mine. Instantly we started to not only talk about the operation and her body's recovery but the importance of thinking about her hair recovery too.

I explained that it’s common to experience hair shedding or thinning after surgery, especially after a hysterectomy; if the ovaries are removed it can cause more shedding and thinning because of the sudden drop in hormones.

Knowing this in advance gave us a chance to put a plan in place; to support her hair and scalp before the changes started. Vicki was all for it and hadn't thought of how it would affect her hair post-op so was keen to get started.

Facebook hysterectomy groups are full of chats about hair and hair loss after the surgery. Many don't realise what affect it would have but, having an open relationship with your hairdresser can help stop you going through this additional trauma.

We introduced Biotin straight away before her surgery to help strengthen her hair and reduce the risk of post-op shedding. (I did warn that B vitamin supplements can cause miss reads on blood tests; so she must tell her GP and consultant that she was taking this.)

We also changed up her home care routine with Maria Nila Repair shampoo and conditioner to nourish and protect. I added in Hairburst Volume & Growth Elixir as a daily spray to support scalp health and boost strength at the root.

We talked through how her texture might change after the surgery and how important it was to stick with the Biotin, not tie hair up with strong elastic bands but use silk or scrunchies which would cause less stress on it in recovery. I wanted her to feel informed and in control because looking after your hair during a big hormonal shift isn’t just about appearance, it’s about confidence.

When Vicki came back post-op, she said the hair prep gave her one less thing to worry about. Her hair felt supported and, more importantly, so did she.

A word from Vicki.

“I didn’t realise how much hormones affect your hair until Claire talked me through it. Having a plan made me feel calmer going into surgery and my hair never took the hit I was dreading.”
